  15. <p>     Attention, class. It's the year 2000, and you have two days
  16. to put out an issue of TIME.
  17. </p>
  18. <p>     That was the assignment handed to 300 seventh- through
  19. tenth-graders in the Northern Valley schools of Bergen County,
  20. N.J., last week by their teachers as part of a six-year-old
  21. campaign to show talented youngsters how to solve complex
  22. problems. The sources for the students' stories were 14
  23. speakers from local universities, government agencies, a law
  24. firm and the press, who talked about everything from the latest
  25. developments in medicine and genetics to demographic trends
  26. and family issues. After a day of listening and note-taking,
  27. the students had six hours to turn the information into issues
  28. of TIME, complete with cover stories and new sections. Their
  29. entries would be judged on content, quality of writing,
  30. plausibility and creativity.

  32. <p>     The students, who came from nine schools in the region, were
  33. divided into groups to produce 21 different magazines. Once
  34. senior editor Thomas Sancton explained how the TIME staff puts
  35. the magazine together each week, the students took over,
  36. assigning themselves to writing, editing and hand printing
  37. their magazines on poster boards, as well as creating
  38. advertisements, graphs and pictures. Says Sancton: "They were
  39. a bright, eager bunch of kids--the ideal TIME journalists of
  40. the future."
  41. </p>
  42. <p>     What did TIME of the year 2000 report? Smokers will be
  43. discouraged to learn that "as of May 1, 2000, cigarettes have
  44. been declared illegal." Dan Quayle will be pleased to discover
  45. that he has become President. The last homeless person in the
  46. U.S. will have found a permanent place to live, somewhere in
  47. Chicago, and the cure for AIDS will have come from a wildflower
  48. found in the jungles of Africa. A top item in Milestones:
  49. Elizabeth Taylor's marriage to Johnny Carson. The covers of the
  50. two winning magazines announced the arrival of aliens on earth
  51. and superbabies created through genetic engineering. "The kids
  52. did a tremendous job," says Patricia Raupers, district
  53. coordinator of gifted programs. "They developed some creative
  54. ideas under a tight deadline."
